When you start college, it is natural to feel apprehended. Feeling nervous and
having fears should not trouble you as it actually indicates that you are
interested in doing well in your college. That's a good sign. Remember, however,
that your nervousness will go as you get familiar with your environment and so
will all your fears. This article is part 1 of the series that explains common
freshman fears and how to get rid of them or handle them.
Freshman Fear
#1: I got admission by accident or by mistake.
You got admission because
you met all the admission criteria of the college. If they had made a mistake,
then they would have let you know by now regarding the same. So relax, you
didn't get into this college by chance, you deserved to be in this
college.
Freshman Fear #2: I will get an awful roommate.
While
this possibility cannot be denied, it is important to remember that most
students do get along well with their roommates. However, mutual understanding
and good communication can help you at any point of time to build a healthy
relationship with a roommate.
Freshman Fear #3: I don't know anyone ?I
will not be able to make friends.
Yes, there is a possibility that some
of the students may know each other but the majority of them are just like you.
They do not know anyone else either and most of them are just as nervous about
meeting new people as you are. Keep this fact in mind and relax. Taking a deep
breath before introducing yourself can also be helpful. Orientation and the
first week of college can be utilized especially for this purpose.
